Since a dicotyledon leaf includes almost all thestructures to be found in the other two,it will be described. the usual type ofa thin leaf of a dicotyledon has several rather definite parts. the broad flatexpansion is the blade. almost always there is the network of the lines toexpand in all directions in the blade. these are the veins. usually either alarge vein, the midrib, extends the entire length of the blade or severalradiating branches replace it. thesystem of veins brings water and minerals into the leaf and carries away thefoods to be synthesized there… the blade is usually attached to the stem of theplant by a slender leaf stalk or petiole.petioles vary greatly in length indifferent species, sometimes being very short or entirely lacking. at the baseof petiole, where it is attached to the stem- there are frequently two smallappendages sometimes to look like rudimentary leaves. these are the stipules.the leaves of a majority of plants have no stipules and in considerable number theyare present when the leaf is young but soon fall off. any part of a plant to besupplied with water and carbon dioxide and which contains chlorophyll so locatedthat it can be reached by light may carry on photosynthesis of all plantstructures. the broad, flat comparatively thin blade is the mostefficient organ of photosynthesis in existence. It is so constructed that a greater part ofsurface in proportions to its actual volume as exposed to air and light and itis thin enough to permit ample light to reach almost every cell.in additioninternal structure is so organized that carbon dioxide and water can reachevery cell.
